Basmati rice is a long-grain aromatic rice originating from the India-Pakistan region, particularly the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Their Sanskrit name ‘basmati’ means ‘aromatic’ or ‘pleasant smell’. This rice is valued for its delicate aroma, long, thin grain and mild flavour. Basmati rice is mostly grown in monsoon climates and can be either white or brown.
Cooked basmati rice has a slightly fluffy texture, as the grains remain separate without clumping together. They are an indispensable ingredient in Indian, Pakistani and Middle Eastern cuisines, used in dishes such as biryani, pulao or as a garnish.
Basmati rice is also valued in the context of a healthy diet as it has a lower glycaemic index than conventional long grain rice. The flavour of this rice is revealed when steamed or soaked before cooking, making it a symbol of sophisticated and exquisite cuisine around the world.
Preparation: cook 1:2 for about 30-40 minutes over low heat in a covered pot without stirring.
